Bataan: Corregidor Island

I wrote this last year, saved it as draft, thought I would have the time to come back and post it, but didn't...until now. I know it's pretty late but I decided to post it anyway since I could still see the deal pop up at Deal Grocer every now and then at the same rate...

...And because Corregidor Island is worth a visit.:D

Below are the details of my package from DealGrocer.com
If you have yet to visit Corregidor Island, now is the perfect time to discover all its exciting secrets with this Overnight Package for 2 at Corregidor Inn, now only P4,500 (P8,400 Originally):
  • Overnight Stay for 2 persons in a standard room
  • Round-trip ferry transfers
  • Guided island tour
  • Choice of one activity: Zipline, ATV or Kayaking for 2
  • Night Lateral Tour (Malinta Tunnel) for 2 persons
  • Buffet Lunch for 2 on the 1st day & Breakfast for 2 on the 2nd day
  • All taxes and surcharges like Terminal/Entrance/Shrine Fees
You can actually choose 2 activities Zipline+ATV or Zipline+Kayaking.

The only issue I had was when I was confirming the reservation with Sun Cruises. Confirmation was subject to availability and given that my voucher was valid for check in from Mondays to Thursdays only, I thought it would be easy. It took me 3 calls, 4 emails, and 1 unfriendly sun cruises reservation agent to confirm my booking.

Once I had it confirmed though, everything went smoothly. From Sun Cruises Port in CCP Complex through my tours: Day Tour + Added Lights and Sound show at Malinta Tunnel- Add Php200.00 + Night Tunnel Lateral Tour (with Sunset and Sunrise Viewing), everyone - the tour guides and the hotel staff were extra nice and friendly.
The Star Cruises Ferry
Tram ride anyone? :)
Big guns...
...and bigger guns...:D
Saw a similar monument at the War Memorial in Seoul...American and Korean soldier of course :)
The Light and Sound Show at the Malinta Tunnel
After the group tour, you'll be able to check in and rest a bit before your Lateral Night Tour + Sunset Viewing.

Rooms at the Hotel were old but clean. Their walls are not thick enough, you can hear doors creaking, opening, and closing, not to mention the footsteps on the corridor - nope, not ghosts, just the guests from the other rooms.
I  love their Chiropractic beds
Enough lounging...hehe

Touring the Island at dawn was an entirely different experience. It was a plus that there were only 4 of us in the tour. Unlike the earlier group tour, this tour felt unhurried and relaxing.
Dinner would be after your night tour, and was not part of the package. The hotel would be your only choice since there's nothing else on the island, except for a small store near the hotel which sells some basic necessities at a reasonable price. Food was too simple and a bit pricey.

***
It's not mentioned on the package, but there will be another tour in the morning to watch the sunrise and discover more tunnels. It would be difficult to drag yourself out of bed but you better do because it's worth it.

Breakfast would be served after the tour. You could then lounge around or proceed with your activities.
There you go, so if you happen to catch that package online...go for it...and no, this is not a Deal Grocer Ad. :p

Cebu: Bantayan Island

Okay, let me try to put this together for you guys. It's been a while but it's fortunate that I was able stash my tickets on my backpack pockets.

I squeezed in this trip in between my 2 weeks business trip in Cebu (February 24-25,2013). It was an overnight trip for me which is not recommended considering the travel time, but I was desperate for a vacation at the time so I was 'i'll get what i can get', hehe.

We were off at 3:30 in the morning to catch the bus departing at 4:00AM going to Hagnaya Port. We took a cab to the North Bus Terminal and was welcomed by a group of men pointing us supposedly to the bus that would depart first. Ignoring them, we chose the most reliable looking bus - Ceres Liner. Bus costs Php150.00/way.

We arrived at Hagnaya 6:30 in the morning but the ferry departing at 7:00AM (Operated by Island Shipping-which was faster with 1.5 hours travel time) was fully booked. We ended up with Super Shuttle Ferry which departed at 8:00AM, travel time was 2 hours. Ferries depart at an hour interval -Php170.00/way +Php5.00 Terminal Fee (2 Php5.00 terminal fees for the return trip).
Approaching Bantayan Island
At the Port

Anika Resort's shuttle was waiting for us when we arrived at Santa Fe port. Anika Island Resort is one of the newest resorts in Bantayan Island and was recommended by a friend. Reservation was done via email but I wouldn't give it here since I received a notice 10 days ago that their email has been hacked. You may still reach Anika Island Resort by phone (+63917)3284898 or check out their website: http://www.anikaislandresort.com/

We got their Garden View Room (Trailer) at Php1750/night. The room was pretty much beach front. I think the only con was that most of what's offered on their menu was unavailable, especially during peak hours. They would nicely inform you though that this and that were out of stock. It might be because the resort is new and they haven't gotten the correct estimate of supplies to meet the demand yet. Anyhow it was remedied by pre-ordering your dinner during lunch.haha!

Activities are also available if you have the time (this is another reason why an overnight trip is not recommended);
Bantayan Island Tour - Php1,800.00
Virgin Island-Island Hopping Activity
Pump Boat Rental- Php900-Php2,500 (varies depending on capacity and destination)
Virgin Island Entrance Fee - Php500.00 (for 5 pax or less) Php50.00 per additional pax
Virgin Island Cottage - Php100.00 (8 pax)
Snorkeling Fee - Php200.00 (if you decide not to dock but snorkel in the area)

There you go, as much detail as I can muster! Enjoy!

Hong Kong: Hong Kong Budget Hostel

A big chunk of your vacation budget would go to your accommodation in Hong Kong, so If you want more money for shopping and sleeping is the last thing on your mind, then go for budget accommodation. Here’s where we stayed on our recent Hong Kong trip-on all our Hong Kong trips actually.

Me and Ate Leng - one of my travel buddies.

A short walk from Mongkok MTR station, Right across Ladies Market with a number of shops, affordable bistros and convenience stores lining the nearby streets is the Hong Kong Budget Hostel.

For only 500.00HKD -125.00HKD/pax/night (Approximately 689.00PHP) you get a private room for 4 with your own comfort room. With Hot and Cold shower! :)

Thynee in blue jacket-my other travel buddy. :)

PROs:
Location-you have easy access to everything!Shops, convenience stores, bistros, MTR, and more shops!
Safety-though it may not seem so at first-I’ve stayed here a number of times and I can always roam to my heart's content and rest assured that my stuff are safe.
Cleanliness- they have 2 elderly folks as housekeepers and they do their job well. Trash is emptied and comfort rooms are cleaned daily. Bath towels and bed sheets though are not changed unless requested.

CONs:
Rooms are smaller than our regular hotel deluxe rooms and have no windows.
Elevator Lines- The Inn is housed inside a residential/commercial building (Sincere Podium) that's being serviced by 4 elevators, 2 on each side of the building. At night though, only 2 elevators are working, and the resulting queue from the number of guests checked in at the inns inside the building plus the building residents can really eat up your time.

Notes: Adaptors are available upon request.

Additional Tips: Buy your basic necessities (toiletries, snacks, etc…) on Bonjour Cosmetics along Ladies Market instead of the convenience stores scattered in the area (7/11,Circle K)-you would save a lot.

Your best bet is exchanging your money ahead of time before getting out of the country so you can get the best rate. If you're already in Hongkong, Hong Kong Exchange's (one of the G/F shops in the building) rates are fair and competitive.

Tuguegarao: Calvary Hills, Callao Caves and Our Lady of Piat

I thought this vacation was a no-go, but the weather was just too good to pass up.
So I went to the airport with the whole vacation idea not sinking in, caught my surprisingly on time air bus flight - I was expecting a delayed flight on a turbo prop - and I'm off to Tuguegarao, Cagayan Valley!

1st Day-Tuguegarao Airport

We arrived via Cebu Pacific in less than an hour. We were able to buy our ticket for 1,292.48Php for 2 pax round trip. A steal.

Ivory Hotel and Suites' free shuttle service was waiting for us when we got there. (All arrangements are done via email - ivoryhotelsuites@yahoo.com)

Ivory Hotel and Suites is a bit far from the city proper, but you'll end up going around the city in a tricycle for the same amount anyway. They have good wifi, centralized hot water, good food, and the room was clean with freshly changed shower curtains in the comfort room .  900Php for their deluxe room. Another bargain considering their amenities.

Going to Iguig Calvary Hills

Our first stop was the Iguig Calvary hills. After a quick rest, we rode a tricycle from Ivory going to Don Domingo (40Php) where we were able to catch the UV Express van going to Alcala. Just inform the driver to drop you off at Calvary Hills. (25Php/pax). Travel time is approximately 20-30 minutes, then a short walk from the drop off point.

The place boasts of the 14 stations of the cross in bigger than life-size depictions across rolling hills overlooking the Cagayan River. It reminded me of Batanes.

Note: Gate closes at 6pm

Going back, you can catch the passing UV express vans en route back to Tugegarao on the same drop off point. (25Php/Pax).

Sts. Peter and Paul Metropolitan Cathedral
Arriving back in Tugegarao,we walked from Don Domingo to Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral.

Pansit Batil Patung
We were hungry after much commuting and walking and since I've heard much about the famed pansit of Tuguegarao, it's on the top of my crave list. They said it's best in Jomars. So we walked from the Cathedral to the nearby Jomar's branch. I was surprised to find that it's actually a beer place.

We ordered their super special pansit  on the go because the place was packed with men enjoying their pansit with freshly cut onions and Red Horse as an early dinner. The 70Php-good- for- 2-3- persons pansit lived up to it's promise. It tasted of Lomi minus the soup. It was good.

We were back at the hotel before 7pm.

Day 2: Callao Caves + Lady of Piat

We woke up early, planning to catch the jeepney going to Penablanca to visit the Callao Caves.

One of Ivory's Breakfast Set-Tuguegarao's Longganisa.
It was tasty, similar in taste to Calumpit's Longganiza.
After breakfast, we took a tricycle to Don Domingo (40Php). We got there just in time to see the 'packed to the roof' jeepney going to Penablanca. We were dropped off instead on the tricycle terminal servicing the Penablanca route and it doesn't look like we much choice, so tricycle it is. It was a long drive, so for it to be worth the driver's gas, the tricycles have to be filled. It can fit up to 7 passengers, 4 inside the side car and 3 on the driver's back. It can take a while, so you may opt to pay for the vacant seats if you're pressed for time, plus you'll be thankful for the additional space once you're halfway through the more or less 1 hour drive passing through rough roads.
Going back to Tugegarao is more tricky. You have to wait for another tricycle to drop off another batch of Callao goers, or catch the passing jeepney going back to Tuguegarao. A constant reminder from the locals-never go to Callao late in the afternon if you don't have your own vehicle. So if you are planning to tour and swim in the river while waiting for the circadian of bats around 6pm, rent a vehicle. (900-1000Php-Tricycle Rental). Our only itinerary was Callao cave, so our tricycle agreed to wait given we would be paying for all seats. (40*6=240Php).

In Callao, a boat would take you across the river going to the cave (20Php/Pax/way). An entrance fee of 20Php/pax would be collected. The famed English speaking kids are ready to guide you through your 285 steps up to the cave and into its 7 chambers (the last 2 chambers are inaccessible). There's no set guide fee, so it's up to you to give them a 'tip'.

Noon is the time to go if you're looking for the 'sun rays inside the cave' postcard shot.

It's 100Php more if you are to go to the area where you can swim and 500Php more if you proceed to watch the circadian of bats at dusk. (Amount is per boat)

The Cave

Heading Back

After getting our fill of the view, we headed back to the hotel for lunch before we were off again to Piat.
Our Lunch-Ampalaya with Beef (99Php)

Fish with Tausi (99Php)
The terminal is near Ivory Suites, beside Shell along Buntun. We walked to the terminal and took the UV Express Van to Piat. There are jeepneys available for the same fare. (60Php/pax). Travel time is approximately 45 minutes.

We passed the Buntun bridge on our way, the second longest river bridge in the country crossing the country's largest and longest river, the Cagayan River with Sierra Madre  in the background. It's a pituresque drive.

Basilica Minore De Nuestra Senora De Piat

The drop off point is at the van terminal which is walking distance from the Church. Our van dropped off some locals residing near the church, so we were able to alight at the church's back gate.

Religious artifact vendors are abundant outside the church gates.
You need an advance group reservation to enter the church museum.
Whether your 'souvenir' artifact is brought from the church store or outside the gates, the local Priest will be more than happy to bless it for you.
 Outside the church

Tobacco Vendors

 Piat's delicacy, Pawa (25php/pack)
Rice cakes with peanut butter in the center.
At around 4pm, we walked back to the terminal where the UV Express vans enroute back to Tugegarao are waiting.

Going back to Manila

The Ivory Suites shuttle service dropped us off in Victory Liner's terminal as early as 5:30AM(Free).Our flight was originally scheduled for Tuesday. But we had to head back Monday. We chose Vistory liner's deluxe bus for 750Php with the promise of 1 stop and 10-11hours drive. However, the bus stopped every chance it got, picking up passengers along the way. It has 4 stop overs (Santiago, Nueva Viscaya, La Paz Tarlac and Dau.) Back in the city, the bus got towed because it stopped in the middle of Edsa due to a mechanical problem. We had to transfer to a regular bus. When we tried to get a refund for the difference of their regular and deluxe bus fare because their Deluxe bus was not able to deliver, the Pasay Branch shift supervisor/station manager couldn't be less emphatic claiming that the bus was not from Pasay but from Kamuning.... Victory Liner is the best Bus if you're going to Baguio, but sadly, not for any other route. Florida is way better for long haul drives (took this one for our Banaue-Sagada trip). Better yet, just fly back to Manila, it's worth every penny! :)
